Karnan

is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language action drama film directed by Mari Selvaraj, and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under his V Creations banner. The film stars Dhanush, Rajisha Vijayan, Lal, Yogi Babu, Azhagam Perumal, Natarajan Subramaniam, Gouri G. Kishan and Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli. The storyline is loosely influenced from the 1995 Kodiyankulam caste violence that happened in Thoothukudi district.

The film features music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography handled by Theni Eswar, and editing done by Selva R. K. It features the titular character Karnan, hailing from a conservative background, fighting for the rights of his people.

Synopsis

Karnan, a fearless village youth, must fight for the rights of the people of his village. The people of the village belong to a marginalized community that has been oppressed for decades, mainly by the dominant caste groups in the region aided by the government officials and the police who intend to keep them suppressed. The story progresses through a plethora of metaphorical symbolisms which reflect various aspects and events of the film in a creative way. The story portrays their struggles, unfairness, and finally their rise against casteism and police brutality by the hero and the entire village.

Production

In November 2018, Dhanush announced his upcoming project will be directed by Mari Selvaraj, who also appreciated the director’s debut film Pariyerum Perumal for its making and content. Selvaraj too confirmed the news in his tweet, and Kalaipuli S. Thanu backed the project under his production house V Creations, his second consecutive film with Dhanush, after Vetrimaaran’s Asuran (2019). Despite its announcement, the project’s launch was delayed owing to Dhanush’s other commitments. In August 2019, reports stated that the film will be tentatively titled as Karnan, although no official confirmation revealed from the producers.
